International Day of Yoga 2026 Theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’ Highlights India’s Holistic Vision for Longevity and Well-being
The theme of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY), to be observed on June 21, 2026, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, reflects the growing global recognition of yoga as a holistic approach to promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being. Rooted in India’s ancient wisdom and embraced across continents, yoga has emerged as a trusted pathway to healthy and active living. The theme highlights yoga’s transformative potential in fostering vitality, resilience and independence, while reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of preventive healthcare and holistic wellness. Speaking on the significance of the theme, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, said, “The theme for this year's IDY, ‘Yoga for Healthy Aging’, holds immense relevance today. As life expectancy continues to rise, it is vital that we learn the art of aging gracefully and healthily—a concept beautifully exemplified in India's ancient civilization, where our sages and yogis sustained longevity and vibrant health through the power of yoga and spiritual discipline.” The theme draws attention to the need for enhancing not only lifespan but also “healthspan” — the period of life spent in good health. Through a combination of physical postures, breathing practices, meditation and mindfulness, yoga offers a comprehensive approach to maintaining mobility, mental well-being and emotional resilience throughout the ageing process.

Dr Jitendra Singh says, “Anusandhan National Research Foundation" (ANRF) is democratising research funding, launches ₹200-crore MAHA Water Mission to support StartUps
Launching the ₹200-crore "Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) –Ministry of Jal Shakti MAHA Water Mission to support StartUps in the Water sector, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Minister of State for PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh today said that the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) is democratising research funding by expanding opportunities for StartUps, MSMEs, universities and innovators across the country, ensuring that national missions, scientific resources and innovation support are no longer confined to a limited number of institutions. Addressing the inaugural session of the National Workshop on R&D in Water at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi, Dr Jitendra Singh said ANRF was created to address a long-standing concern that a significant share of research funding often flowed to a few established institutions, while smaller universities, startups and emerging innovators remained outside the mainstream innovation ecosystem. The Foundation, he said, is widening access to resources, partnerships and mission-oriented research opportunities, enabling institutions and innovators from across the country to contribute to national priorities. The Minister said ANRF has emerged as a national platform for mission-driven innovation and has already launched Missions for Advancement in High-Impact Areas (MAHA) in strategic sectors including Electric Vehicles, Drones, Medical Technologies, 6G Communications and Water. These missions are creating an integrated pathway from fundamental research to technology development, validation and deployment while bringing together academia, industry, startups and government institutions to solve critical national challenges. The launch of the MAHA Water Mission, he said, marks another major step in this direction.

Union Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Launches Nationwide ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ from Raisen, Madhya Pradesh
Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, launched the nationwide 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' from Ramasiya village in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, delivering a clear message to farmers that if the soil is protected, agriculture will thrive, farmers will become stronger, and the nation will prosper. He called for the promotion of balanced fertilizer use, soil testing, Soil Health Cards, natural farming, water conservation, and scientific agricultural practices. Launching the month-long campaign, which will run across the country from June 1 to June 30, Shri Chouhan said that the Earth is our mother and protecting its health is a collective responsibility. He appealed to farmers to avoid the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and instead apply fertilizers only according to the actual requirements of the soil based on scientific testing. He noted that excessive use of chemicals reduces soil fertility and destroys beneficial micro organisms present in the soil, directly affecting agricultural productivity and increasing cultivation costs. The Union Minister said that the 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' is a national resolve to protect Mother Earth. Under the campaign, agricultural scientists, experts from agricultural universities, officials of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, agriculture department teams, and public representatives will visit villages across the country to create awareness among farmers. Farmers will be educated about soil testing, balanced nutrient management, natural farming, modern sowing techniques, water conservation, and advanced agricultural practices.

4,000 yrs of climate history from world’s largest inhabited river island offer adaption insights
A new study has reconstructed nearly 4,000 years of climate and vegetation history of Majuli Island, Assam—the world’s largest inhabited river island, culturally significant as the settlement of several tribes and as a major centre of Neo-Vaishnavite culture, a reformist Vaishnavism movement. The study offers a long-term perspective on climate variability, vegetation change, and flood dynamics on Majuli Island and could shape adaptation strategies for flood-affected communities. Majuli Island, perched between the Brahmaputra River to the south and east, the Subansiri River to the west, and a branch of the Brahmaputra to the north, has been severely affected by recurrent flooding and intense riverbank erosion. Despite its global importance in acquiring UNESCO tentative status for cultural significance, the region lacked any comprehensive long-term palaeoecological reconstruction based on palynological evidence resting on integrated modern and fossil pollen records. Pollen serves, as one of the most reliable indicators of past environmental conditions as they are durable and can remain preserved in sediments for thousands to millions of years.

In line with this year’s World Honey Bee Day theme — “Bee Together for People and the Planet” — the programmes highlighted the important role of honeybees in environmental conservation, agricultural productivity and strengthening biodiversity. Addressing participants joined virtually from across the country, Chairman, KVIC, Shri Manoj Kumar said that this year’s World Honey Bee Day programmes have been organized through virtual mode in accordance with Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of energy conservation, judicious use of resources and effective management with minimal expenditure. This not only reduced unnecessary travel and fuel consumption, but also ensured the participation of a large number of people from different states of the country. He further said that honey bees are vital protectors of nature and the agricultural ecosystem, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming “White Revolution into Sweet Revolution” has accelerated self-employment and self-reliance in villages. Today, beekeeping has become a strong medium for strengthening agriculture, the environment and the rural economy. The Chairman further said that at a time when the entire world is worried about the conservation of honeybees, India has taken positive initiatives in this direction, with major credit going to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that while launching the “Sweet Revolution” from Banaskantha, Gujarat in 2016, the Prime Minister had stated, “Where there has been a White Revolution, there will now also be a Sweet Revolution.” He added that this was not merely a slogan, but a comprehensive vision for villages, farmers and the building of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat (आत्मनिर्भर भारत). Taking inspiration from the Prime Minister’s vision, KVIC launched the ‘Honey Mission’ in 2017, which has now become a strong medium for employment and self-reliance in rural areas.

GDP growth likely eased in January-March quarter on softer external demand
India's economic growth is projected to have eased to 7.2% in Q1 2026, as weaker external demand and industrial activity tempered strong government spending and agricultural resilience. While external shocks haven't derailed its fastest-growing major economy status, subdued private investment remains a concern. Services growth is expected to stay robust, but manufacturing may see slower expansion.

Joint statement by the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and WHO concerning the outbreak of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus
The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) reaffirm their strong partnership and shared commitment to protect the health and well-being of the people of Ituri Province and the nation at large, following the joint mission to Bunia led by Dr Samuel Roger Kamba, Minister of Health, Mr. Patrick Muyaya Katembwe, Minister of Communication and Medias, and the visit of WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. This high-level visit comes at a challenging time, as the country responds to an outbreak of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus. The Ministry of Health reports a rapidly evolving situation, with cases and deaths notified in several health zones of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu. The Government, with support from WHO and partners, is intensifying surveillance, laboratory testing and patient care to interrupt transmission as quickly as possibleThe Government of the DRC is firmly leading a comprehensive national response, working closely with provincial authorities in Ituri and neighbouring provinces. WHO, alongside the broader United Nations system and health and humanitarian partners, is fully committed to supporting these efforts. Together, DRC authorities, WHO and partners are working to strengthen coordination, mobilize additional resources, and ensure that life-saving interventions reach affected communities quickly and equitablyCentral to this response is the recognition that communities are at the heart of the solution. Success will depend on the trust, engagement and leadership of local communities. National and provincial authorities, with support from WHO and partners, are intensifying dialogue with community leaders, women's groups, youth representatives, religious leaders and the private sector to better understand local concerns and co-develop solutions that are culturally appropriate and effective. While the Bundibugyo strain presents additional challenges, including the absence of a licensed vaccine or specific treatment, proven public health measures remain effective in slowing transmission and potential full recovery. The Ministry of Health, WHO and partners are working to rapidly undertake randomized control trials on candidate vaccines and treatments.Persistent challenges include early detection and isolation of cases, contact tracing, safe and dignified burials, robust infection prevention and control in health facilities, and strong community awareness. The Government and WHO call on all communities to continue adopting protective behaviours, including regular hand hygiene, early care seeking in health facilities, and sharing accurate information. The DRC brings unparalleled experience to this response, having successfully contained multiple previous Ebola outbreaks. This experience, combined with strong political leadership at the highest level of the State and renewed international solidarity, provides a firm foundation for bringing the current outbreak under control. Both parties emphasize that outbreak response must maintain primary health care and essential services and strengthen long-term health system resilience. Investments made today in laboratories, health workers, surveillance systems and essential services will leave a legacy for the people of Ituri and the DRC as a whole. We sincerely thank our international partners for the support already provided to response operations, and we encourage sustained solidarity to bring this outbreak under control. Cooperation between countries must also ensure that borders remain open, and that entry controls do not obstruct the flow of desperately needed medical supplies and personnel.Together, DRC authorities, WHO, Africa CDC and partners are working to strengthen coordination, mobilize additional resources, and ensure that life-saving interventions reach affected communities quickly and equitably.
